Charleville Golf Clubs New Golf Course Superintendant Eoghan Buckley

We at Charleville Golf Club are delighted to announce the appointment of Eoghan Buckley as our new Golf Course Superintendant. Eoghan will take over the reins on November 3rd from Seamus Lyons who has served us faithfully for the last number of years.

You would have to agree that "Famous Seamus" as he is known in golfing circles, has always had the good of the club at his heart. He always had the course in immaculate condition especially in the past few years, when budgets were tight. Seamus always led from the front and no job was too big. He can now relax and enjoy more golf and frequent trips to his beloved Ballyheigue along with his wife Margaret. A great debt is owed to Seamus by all at Charleville Golf Club and we wish you a long healthy and happy retirement.

Eoghan hails from County Laois and was brought up golfing at Mountrath Golf Club where he would later become the Superintendant for three years in 2005.

Eoghans family have a strong background in Horticulture, his father and brother work with coillte so it was no great surprise that Eoghan combined his two passions to forge his career. He studied Horticulture in The Botanic Gardens in Dublin, and then progressed his studies by moving to the UK to complete a BSc in Turfgrass Science and Golf Course Management in Myerscough College. He then completed his studies at Cranfield University with a MSc in Sports Surface Technologies in 2003.

Eoghans resume shows a list of impressive places that he worked worldwide Portmarnock Old, Tpc Sawgrass, Congressional Country Club, The Heritage and more recently Seymore Golf and Country Club In Vancouver Canada.

Eoghan brings his wealth of experience and knowledge to the Club and may we wish him all the success for the future. We would also like to welcome Eoghans wife Marie and their two small children, Donnacah 2 ½ and Ruairi 2months who will be making the move over the next few weeks.

"Youth is such a wonderful thing. What a crime to waste it on the young" George Bernard Shaw's famous quotation came to mind in Charleville Golf Club this week with the announcement of both the Ladies and Gents Golfer of the Year. Both Olive Connolly and Michael Hawe are prominent members of our senior Golfers participating in the competitions each week.Michael a winner of so many prizes down the years has previously won 3 Golfer of the Year prizes and now in the back nine of his golfing career he claims this is his best. This is Olive Connolly's First but it came as no surprise following such consistent form throughout the year. Well done to both. They carry our best wishes for success. Was George Bernard Shaw correct.?

Seniors Golf. Wednesday 29th October

2nd Jack Morris Mick Walsh Kevin Cagney Tony Connolly 105 pts. Cab

With a field of 32 all teams were 4 instead of the customary 3 and consequently returned scores were much higher There was much surprise when four scores were over 100 pts. Marvellous scores from 60 and 7o year olds

Refurbished Clubhouse
The newly refurbished Clubhouse was unveiled for the Annual Mass for deceased members on Monday night . It's modern decor with muted colours of Subtle and Mid Patina was very much admired. The new decor is a fitting tribute to our Management Committee, our Officers present and incoming, our so many ladies and men who worked so hard over the past three weeks, dusting, cleaning framing pictures and photographs and giving the members a history of the club over the past 70 years. Of special interest is the wall dedicated to the founding members who during the difficult years of World War 2 purchased the land and laid the foundations of the wonderful club we have enjoyed all these years. The late P.J. Murray , a past Captain and President loved to be present and say a few words on social occasions and always finished with the phrase " They built better than they knew"
